There is no more Brazilian drink than the Caipirinha. Made from just three ingredients — cachaça, fresh lime, and sugar — it is devastatingly simple and devastatingly good.
Ingredients (1 serving)
Ingredients
- ½ lime, cut into 4–6 wedges
- 2 tsp granulated white sugar (or to taste)
- 60ml cachaça
- Crushed ice
Method
- Place lime wedges and sugar in a rocks glass or tumbler.
- Muddle firmly but gently — press down and twist to release the juice and oils from the lime skin. Do not over-muddle or you'll extract bitter pith.
- Fill the glass completely with crushed ice.
- Pour cachaça over the ice.
- Stir well for 10–15 seconds. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
- Serve immediately with a short straw.
Choosing the Right Cachaça
Cachaça is distilled from fresh sugarcane juice — not molasses like rum. For Caipirinhas, use a silver (unaged) cachaça — smooth and slightly grassy. Recommended brands internationally: Ypióca, Velho Barreiro, Novo Fogo Silver, or Leblon.
Variations
- Caipivodka: Replace cachaça with vodka. Milder and more approachable.
- Caipiríssima: Use white rum instead.
- Morango: Add 3–4 strawberry halves to the muddle.
- Maracujá: Add 2 tbsp passion fruit pulp. Tropical perfection.
