Long before açaí became a global wellness trend, Brazilians — especially in the Amazon — had been eating it for centuries. But the way Brazilians eat açaí is quite different from the Instagram-perfect bowls you see worldwide. In Brazil, açaí is thick, slightly sweetened, and eaten with granola and banana — a simple, energizing meal.
Ingredients (Serves 2)
Açaí Base
- 400g frozen açaí pulp (unsweetened packets)
- 100ml unsweetened almond milk or coconut water
- 1 frozen banana · 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup
Classic Brazilian Toppings
- Granola · Sliced banana · Sliced strawberries
- Honey drizzle · Coconut flakes
Instructions
Break the frozen açaí packets into chunks. Place in a high-powered blender with the frozen banana and liquid. Blend on high until smooth and very thick — the consistency should be like thick soft-serve ice cream. Add liquid one tablespoon at a time only if needed. Add honey and blend briefly.
Pour immediately into cold bowls (pre-chill bowls in the freezer for 5 minutes). Add toppings and serve immediately.
How Brazilians Really Eat Açaí: In São Paulo and Rio, the most popular combination is simply thick açaí + granola + sliced banana + honey. No protein powder, no chia seeds. Pure, straightforward, and utterly delicious.
